In November, the Jewish Music and Theatre Week Association elected a new board. In addition to Marianne Steinhagen as Chairwoman of the Board, Maria Noth and Stephan Hoffmann were elected. This new appointment marks a new beginning in terms of personnel, which is part of a comprehensive change process that the association initiated at the beginning of 2024, and the successful work of the previous board under the chairmanship of Valentina Marcenaro is to be continued. Valentina Marcenaro will continue to play an active role in shaping the festival as part of a curatorial collective that will develop content and programme items.
In recent years, it has become clear that a festival at a high artistic level was only possible under the previous framework conditions with enormous personal commitment - to the point of self-exploitation - which is why the organisation has begun a strategic reorientation. With the support of a professional moderator, the history of the festival was reflected upon together with members of the association and cultural experts from Dresden who are associated with the association, existing structures were scrutinised and new ideas and formats were developed.
New cooperation with the Societaetstheater
The desire for a location where the events could be concentrated and the festival atmosphere could unfold even more strongly also matured. With the Societaetstheater, not only was this location found, but also a cooperation partner that provides both expertise and resources that are urgently needed.
New festival format in October 2025
The next festival will take place from 23 to 26 October 2025 in a compact format over four days. Events are also planned during the day from Thursday to Sunday in order to create a festival atmosphere in which the invited artists and speakers as well as the audience, the association and guests can meet and network over several days. A celebration of contemporary Jewish culture is planned in the various spaces of the Societaetstheater. In addition to classical formats, access will also be offered via participatory event formats. We are interested in a constructive, enriching exploration of Jewish themes and perspectives through the enjoyment of art, encounters and exchange.
The working title of the festival is ‘Listen to us! Invitation to a change of perspective.’. The festival invites you to use artistic and interactive methods to explore the lives and topics of contemporary Jews. and reflect on the lives and issues of contemporary Jews. Who are we? The symposium organised by the association in April 2024 showed how enriching it can be to look at and talk about things from a Jewish perspective. It is about everyday and personal, political and critical perspectives as well as exciting artistic contributions
